The municipality lies on both sides of the Gail in the Lower Gailtal, bordered by the main ridge of the Carnic Alps to the south and the Gailtal Alps to the north, and is bilingual to this day. The parish church was first documented in 1392, reconsecrated in 1498 after its destruction by the Turks in 1478, and is a late Gothic building whose tower is crowned by a four-sided pyramidal spire. The customs of the valley include the Kufenstechen and the Gailtal traditional costume. Martin Wirth, who originally came from the Goldene Aue, captured the Gailtal village in 1990.
