Martin Wirth, "Kleinstadt im Böhmerwald", view over gardens to steeple and mountains, Šumava, 1983 (1939 – 2017 Ilsenburg), watercolour on paper, unsigned, inscribed and dated verso "Kleinstadt im Böhmerwald (ČSR) 1983", view across a garden meadow with trees to a house with red gabled roof and dormer, in front brownish-red wooden sheds, beyond a church with tall pointed tower, clock and side turrets, wooded blue mountains in the background, good condition commensurate with age, paper slightly yellowed, image 24x32 cm (HxW) The forested range of Šumava, German Böhmerwald (Bohemian Forest), separates Bohemia from Bavaria and Austria; large parts of the Czech side today form the Šumava National Park. Since the Middle Ages glassmaking has shaped the region, from which glassworks such as Lötz, Kralik and Meyr's Neffe later emerged. The landscape is familiar from the stories of Adalbert Stifter, and Carl Maria von Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" is set there. At the time the sheet was made, the Czech part of the range belonged to Czechoslovakia.
