Martin Wirth, Two views of Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz and seafront promenade, Canary Islands, 1992 (1939 – 2017 Ilsenburg), two drawings, fineliner on card, each signed and dated (19)92 lower right, 1) Puerto de la Cruz, inscribed verso "Puerto de la Cruz (Teneriffa)", rocky coast with dark lava rocks and surf, above it a building with round-arched arcades and terrace, behind it houses with wooden balconies and palm trees, in front a kiosk with awning against the rock face, guests at tables and bathers on the beach, good condition commensurate with age, slightly stained and creased in places, image 36x48 cm (HxW), 2) Tenerife, seafront promenade, partly coloured with coloured pencils, inscribed verso "Teneriffa, 1992 Strandpromenade", flights of steps of the seafront promenade leading down to the sea, on the left lava rocks with a rock grotto and surf coloured in blue, behind them a small chapel with bell gable, probably the chapel of San Telmo, palm trees, agaves, hotel buildings with the lettering "HOTEL" and tiled roofs coloured in orange, numerous passers-by, good condition commensurate with age, slightly stained and creased in places, image 36x48 cm (HxW) Puerto de la Cruz lies on the north coast of Tenerife in the Orotava Valley and developed from a port town into a holiday destination, whose tourism began in the 19th century with British visitors. In the early 1970s the seawater lido Lago Martiánez was created to designs by César Manrique. On a rocky rise at the eastern end of the bay stands the Ermita de San Telmo, rebuilt in 1780 at the instigation of the seafarers' guild; its bell gable, Spanish espadaña, carries a bell, and since 1968 the German-speaking congregation has held services there. Wirth, an art teacher based in the Harz, used holidays such as this one to the Canary Islands for his drawings.
