Erich Krueger, Floral Still Life with White and Pink Phlox Oil on hardboard, signed lower left, a lavish bunch of phlox in a plain glass vase on a white cloth, the umbels in white and delicate rose, at the centre a strong old-rose panicle, between them grey-green leaves and stems, the ground broadly and loosely laid in warm brown and ochre tones, the blossoms set in short dabs, condition commensurate with age, paint losses and scratches in places, image 49.5x39.5 cm (HxW), framed in a light green painted moulding, frame width 2.5 cm In the 20th century phlox was one of the most widespread cottage-garden perennials and accordingly a popular motif of still life painting. Erich Krueger took up the theme repeatedly and rendered it in an open, dabbing manner that creates the fullness of the panicles through the colour field rather than through the individual blossom.
