Reimann, Przewalski's Horse in the Steppe, Mongolian Wild Horse Oil on canvas, signed lower right, a wild horse stands in dry steppe grass and gazes out of the picture to the left, the pale yellow coat, the black upright mane, the dark eel stripe along the back and the light muzzle identify it as a Przewalski's horse, the foreground broadly laid in ochre, sand yellow and broken white, among it individual pale stones and dry twigs, the sky in cool blue-grey without cloud drawing, good condition, image 40.5x50.5 cm (HxW) Przewalski's horse is the only never-domesticated form of wild horse and was regarded as extinct in the wild from the 1960s; it survived solely in zoological gardens, from whose stocks it was later reintroduced. For animal painters of the late 20th century it was therefore a motif with a pronounced documentary character, usually worked from zoo animals.
