Georg Wegener, three pheasants in an autumnal clearing with birches, landscape format (1917 Magdeburg – ?). Oil on canvas, signed at lower right “Wegener”, scratched into the paint. Wide landscape format: in an autumnal yellow-brown meadow three pheasants, at left and centre a cock each with iridescent blue-green head, red facial mask and long barred tail, at right a hen in muted brown. Beside and behind them single slender birches, at left one with golden-yellow foliage, the others bare; at the left edge in the middle ground two grey boulders. In the middle ground a bluish fading edge of woodland, above it a bright sky with an orange evening streak. Impasto paint applied in short strokes. Good condition. Image 50.5x100 cm (HxW), framed in a gilt moulding with ornamental corners, frame rubbed, frame width 10.5 cm. Georg Wegener is listed in the auction trade as a landscape and genre painter with the addition 1917 Magdeburg. Documented are Harz and low mountain landscapes, among them repeatedly the view of the Brocken and water mills, as well as game subjects with capercaillie, red deer, stags, wild boar and pheasants and hunting scenes with riders and hounds.
