Meyer-Alto, Sunflowers in a Blue Glass Jug, Flower Still Life, Gouache Gouache and chalk on card. Signed lower right in red „Meyer-Alto". A generous bunch of sunflowers in a bulbous, deep blue glass jug standing on a brownish striped table top; the blossoms in yellow and ochre with dark brown centres, between them large green leaves. The background laid in with loose vertical strokes of blue, ochre and yellow. Good condition commensurate with age, stained in places. Image 35.5x28 cm (HxW). Mounted under a mount, the mount foxed, overall 50x42 cm (HxW) The sunflower still life has been among the most frequently painted subjects of modern art since van Gogh. The technique chosen here, opaque gouache heightened with chalk, allows strong, opaque areas of colour with rapid execution and was widespread in flower pieces in the first half of the 20th c. The parallel strokes in the background and the simplified forms point to that period.
