Landscape Painter, Winter Mountain Landscape with Snow-Covered Ridge and Conifers Gouache on board, unsigned, 20th century. View across an ochre-brown slope patched with snow, with dark conifers and bare trunks in the left foreground, towards a snow-covered ridge on the right, behind it a grey mountain massif under a yellowish grey clouded sky; the palette keyed to ochre, grey and white. Good condition commensurate with age, locally stained, image 19x26 cm (HxW), mount, behind glass, framed, the frame knocked, overall 35x41 cm (HxW). Gouache, also known as body colour painting, works with water-soluble pigments made opaque by chalk or lead white and, unlike transparent watercolour, allows light tones to be laid over a dark ground. Winter views of the high mountains had belonged to the standard repertoire of Alpine painting since the 19th century and were sought after in the 20th century above all as travel and souvenir pictures. An atmospheric small format for a collection of landscape depictions.
