Willy Habl, Landscape with Church under a Wide Sky, Sheet Painted on Both Sides, North Germany (1888 Egeln to 1964 Hamburg), watercolour over pencil underdrawing on board, mounted on a support, signed Habl at lower right, on the reverse a further watercolour of a river landscape with a boat and people walking, likewise signed at lower right. Above staggered fields in brown, ochre, green and deep blue, a group of trees with a white church with a pointed ridge turret rises on the horizon; a light field track leads into the distance. The upper part of the picture is filled by a wide sky with long bands of grey cloud over a cream ground. Condition commensurate with age, browned, light-stained, foxed, image 37.5x47.5 cm (HxW), overall 46x62 cm (HxW). The wide, cloud-filled sky above a low horizon is a pictorial formula of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting which North German Impressionism took up again. Works by Habl are held among others in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Altonaer Museum and in Prague.
