902 - Erich Graf, Grey Partridges in a Summer Flower Meadow at the Field Edge

Erich Graf, Grey Partridges in a Summer Flower Meadow at the Field Edge Oil on canvas, signed lower right, at the right edge of the composition four grey partridges stand in the tall grass of a meadow margin, the plumage drawn in grey and red-brown with finely barred flanks, in front of them a flowering strip of meadow with oxeye daisies, yellow umbels and red poppies, behind it a ripe cornfield ending at a closed woodland edge of deciduous trees and conifers, above it a summer sky with pale veil clouds, good condition, image 24x30 cm (HxW), framed in a wide dark-stained wooden moulding with gilt inner edge, frame width 6.5 cm Until the middle of the 20th century the grey partridge was the most common small game of the open field landscape and accordingly a widespread motif of hunting painting. Pictures with a covey at the field margin stand in this tradition; here the finely executed flower meadow in the foreground combines the hunting motif with the type of the summer landscape picture.
