Ludewig, Harz Landscape with massive tree stump, spruce and birch in autumn, dated 1946 Watercolour on paper, signed and dated 1946 lower right, hill with a large tree stump with exposed roots, to the right a spruce and a birch with autumn-coloured leaves, the meadow heightened with white under a cloudy sky, condition commensurate with age, paper browned, stained upper right, image 45.5x33 cm (HxW), mount, glazed, framed, frame with knocks, overall 68x51 cm (HxW) In watercolour, water-soluble, translucent paints are applied to paper; the light tone of the paper shows through the layers of colour. Highlights are applied in opaque white paint, as here in the grasses, roots and birch bark.
