Expressionist harbour view, billowing clouds above blue water, spit of land, in stucco frame Oil/canvas, monogrammed lower right, harbour view in landscape format, large white and pale yellow billowing clouds with dark outlines against a blue sky at the top, in the centre a blue expanse of water reaching to the horizon, on the right an orange-brown spit of land, in front of it three dark posts standing at an angle in the water, in the foreground the shore zone in areas of blue, orange, yellow and white, good condition commensurate with age, craquelure, image 60x120.5 cm (HxW), framed, frame chipped, frame width 8 cm With the artists' colony of Nidden on the Curonian Spit, where Max Pechstein painted from 1909 and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff from 1913, the Baltic coast became a principal motif of German Expressionism; Pechstein worked in Leba and Rowe from 1921 to 1945, Schmidt-Rottluff in Jershöft and Rumbke on the Pomeranian coast from 1932 to 1943. This painting is characterised by luminous colour applied in broad areas and simplified forms. As harbour and sea picture, the Expressionist coastal landscape combines the expanse of water with the clouds of the sky.
