Tile with harbour scene at evening, hand painting with sailing boats at the quay, probably c. 1900 Ceramic, decorated polychrome in hand painting. Harbour scene at evening: two sailing boats with reefed brown sails lie at a wooden quay, several figures stand on the jetty, at the right a two-master putting out to sea; in the foreground a line of groynes and posts leads through the shallow water. The sky in yellow and ochre with bands of cloud, the water laid in reflecting tones. Incised 'GT' into the glaze at lower left. Marked on the reverse with the ligatured monogram 'GT' and 'Handmalerei No. 400'. Age-appropriate good condition. Tile 8.5 x 20 cm (HxW), framed, frame bumped, frame width 3 cm. Hand-painted picture tiles were produced in large numbers as small-format wall decoration in the late 19th and early 20th century. The white blanks generally came from the large wall tile factories and were decorated by independent painting workshops, which marked their work with their own monogram and a running decor number. Maritime subjects were among the most sought-after themes of these workshops and take up the tradition of Dutch marine painting.
