Hermann Ritzau, Harz view, village by a river in a wooded valley, landscape of the Düsseldorf School (1866 Wolsdorf – 1922 Helmstedt), watercolour/paper, signed lower right "H. Ritzau", Harz view, in the foreground a broad river with moving water, on the left bushes on the bank and spruces, behind them houses with red and grey roofs, further houses by the path in the middle of the valley, on the right a bank wall, deciduous trees and dense greenery, in the background wooded mountain slopes under a blue sky with clouds, condition commensurate with age, foxed, image 22.5x28.5 cm (HxW), glazed, framed, frame width 1.5 cm. Hermann Ritzau was born in Wolsdorf in 1866 and died in Helmstedt in 1922. After a year at the art school in Weimar, he studied from 1884 to 1893 at the Düsseldorf Academy under the landscape painter Eugen Dücker and thus belongs to the Düsseldorf School of painting. As a landscape painter he travelled in the Harz, the Lüneburg Heath and on the island of Rügen. In Helmstedt he taught drawing at the Gymnasium Julianum.
