Monogrammist CH, Dynamic study of a rider with three horses, 19th/20th C. Pencil and watercolour on paper, monogrammed at lower right. At the center of the atmospheric scene, a rider wearing a blue riding jacket and stylish headgear is mounted on a grey horse. The composition is flanked by two other horses: on the left, a brown horse turns away with its head lowered, while on the right, a third horse surges forward in dynamic motion. The fleeting, sketchy brushwork captures the animals' anatomy and movement with precision, while deliberate color accents in shades of blue and brown lend depth and a sense of three-dimensionality to the rendering. Condition commensurate with age, browned, small stains in the area of the middle horse's neck, water-stained at the top, image 53x42.5 cm (HxW), mount, behind glass, framed, the frame slightly knocked, overall 63x53 cm (HxW). The loose, study-like character of the sheet and its large format point to a work from the studio of a trained animal painter. A sheet for collectors of depictions of horses and equestrian art.
