Carl Leopold Voss, "Herzeleid", monk and woman at stone steps with wayside shrine, Munich painter (1856 Rome to 1921 Munich), pen on paper, watercoloured, signed lower right, scene in front of a stone wall with steps, on them a monk in habit with hood and rosary, front left a woman in a checked skirt and white shawl, resting her head mournfully on her arms against a pillar, on the wall a wayside shrine with lantern and a relief stone with a heart, a dove on the steps, in shades of grey heightened with white, good condition commensurate with age, paper yellowed, image 41.5x27.5 cm (HxW), mount, glazed, framed, overall 58x44 cm (HxW) Carl Leopold Voss (1856 to 1921) was born in Rome, the son of the sculptor Karl Voss, who lived there from 1850 to 1894. He worked as a genre and history painter, illustrator and bookplate artist, first in Rome, from 1877 in Munich, from 1886 to 1888 again in Rome and from 1889 until his death in Munich. His painting "S. Bonaventura" of 1888 is in the Lenbachhaus.
