Probably Wilhelm Nabert, "Harzlandschaft beim Regenstein", Harz rocky landscape, 2nd half 19th c. Oil on board, unsigned, verso titled on a label "Harzlandschaft beim Regenstein" and inscribed "W.J.A. Nabert", below inscribed in pencil, probably Wilhelm Julius August Nabert (1830 Braunschweig – 1904 Düsseldorf), 2nd half of the 19th century. Harz landscape at the Regenstein: jagged grey rocks in the foreground and middle ground, on the rock summit a small conifer, deciduous shrubs between the rocks, in the foreground low plants with pink flowers, on the right the view into the wide plain of the Harz foreland with further rock cliffs in the haze, above light blue sky with white clouds. Good condition commensurate with age. Image 47x60 cm (HxW), framed, black frame with gold-coloured inner moulding, frame width 6.5 cm. Wilhelm Julius August Nabert, born in Braunschweig in 1830, received his first drawing and painting lessons from Heinrich Brandes at the Collegium Carolinum in his home town and from 1856 studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Hans Fredrik Gude. After years in Karlsruhe and a teaching post in Braunschweig, he lived in Düsseldorf until his death in 1904; his forest and mountain landscapes from the Harz, the Alps and the Rhine-Main region were shown at exhibitions in Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg and Hanover. A Harz landscape by Nabert belongs to the painting collection of Wernigerode Castle, which assigns it to Harz painting and the Düsseldorf school of painting. The Regenstein near Blankenburg on the northern edge of the Harz is a rocky ridge with the remains of a rock castle whose rooms were carved out of the sandstone; the complex includes 18th-century fortifications with casemates and gatehouse.
