Hermann Krüger, Alpine landscape at Hintersee with chapel in evening light, Düsseldorf School oil on canvas, signed lower right, mountain scene with a peaceful riverside landscape in the evening light, the view leads to a small chapel, the warm light of the setting sun settles over mountains, water, and forest of the Berchtesgadener Land, creating a solemn atmosphere between nature observation and romantic elevation, age-appropriate condition, craquelure, partial color loss, retouching, canvas slightly wavy, image 53.5 x 79.5 cm (HxW), framed, frame bumped, frame width 16 cm Hermann Krüger (1834 Cottbus – 1908 Baden-Baden) came from a Cottbus merchant family and studied in Munich under Adalbert Waagen, in Berlin under Max Schmidt and from 1867 in Düsseldorf under Albert Flamm. He was a private pupil of Oswald Achenbach, whom he accompanied to Italy several times, and belonged to the Malkasten artists' association in Düsseldorf. He became known above all for landscapes of the North Italian lakes and the surroundings of Rome, Naples, Capri and Sorrento; one of his paintings is held in the Carl Blechen Collection at Schloss Branitz. With the Hintersee near Ramsau in the Berchtesgadener Land he chose a subject that had attracted painters of the Munich and Vienna schools since the 1830s, among them Carl Rottmann, Ludwig Richter and Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller; the Gasthof Auzinger on the lake served them as lodgings. The peaks of the Hochkalter and the Reiter Alpe and the 17th-century Antonikapelle shape the landscape around the lake.
