Cossack with horse, drawing on General Chernyshov's entry into Hoym in 1813 Probably pen and pencil on paper, mounted on a support. Below the image, on an attached piece of paper, inscribed in ink: 'Am Abend des 18ten October 1813 rueckte hier in Hoym General Ctzernischeff mit ueber 5000 Kosacken ein.' Depicted is a Cossack in a long coat with belt and pointed cap, the lance in his right hand, holding a rearing horse by the bridle with his left. The drawing modelled throughout with fine hatching, the paper darkened. Age-appropriate condition, brittle, stained, cockled, partial losses in the paper. Image 32.5 x 39 cm (HxW), behind glass, framed, frame bumped, overall 52 x 60 cm (HxW). The 'General Ctzernischeff' named on the sheet is Alexander Ivanovich Chernyshov (1786 Moscow – 1857 Castellammare di Stabia), one of the best known Russian commanders of light cavalry in the Wars of Liberation; before 1812 he was a military agent in Paris, was made count in 1826, prince in 1841, and served as Russian minister of war from 1832 to 1852. His flying corps carried out the raid on Berlin in February 1813, fought near Halberstadt at the end of May 1813 and reached Kassel at the end of September 1813, where on 1 October 1813 Chernyshov proclaimed that the Kingdom of Westphalia had ceased to exist. 18 October 1813 was the main day of fighting in the Battle of Leipzig. Hoym, a town since 1543 and from 1721 residence of the principality of Anhalt-Bernburg-Hoym, today belongs to the town of Seeland in the Salzland district.
