Hermès was founded in Paris in 1837 as the harness-making business of Thierry Hermès (1801–1878). Silk ties have been part of the range since 1949; the printed models of the house are made of light silk twill, patterned by screen printing, cut from two lengths of fabric and sewn by hand. Animal motifs and depictions of horses are among the recurring themes of these designer ties; the archive of the Maison comprises more than 75,000 colourways. The model for the carriage motif in the trademark was a gouache by Alfred de Dreux that Émile-Maurice Hermès acquired in the 1920s.
