Gentleman's ring, 585 red and white gold, sapphire and twelve cubic zirconia, link shoulders, Poland 585 red gold and white gold, sapphire and cubic zirconia. Gentleman's ring, stamped on the outside of the shank with the Polish state gold hallmark “585” of the Bydgoszcz assay office and with a rectangular stamp with four characters, not deciphered; flat square ring head with white gold plate, in the centre a square faceted blue sapphire in a square bezel setting with millegrain border, surrounded by a cluster of twelve round claw-set cubic zirconia, the edge of the plate with millegrain; shoulders on both sides with three rows of rectangular, domed links, the middle row in white gold; shank tapering towards the base. Good condition. Inner diameter 21 mm. 360-degree photo available on our website. A ring in which a coloured centre stone is framed by a surround of smaller stones is called an entourage ring; the surround enhances the effect of the centre stone, and this ring form is regarded as a classic of jewellery history. The sapphire once adorned the rings of bishops because it was said to ward off deception and untruth; from this arose its meaning in the language of gemstones as the stone of fidelity, truth and constant affection. The Polish state hallmark for gold wares shows a knight's head in profile, to its left the identifying letter of the assay office and to its right the fineness number; the letter B stands for the assay office in Bydgoszcz. Rings in two colours of gold are known as bicolour rings.
