Lady's ring, 585 yellow gold with natural aquamarine in Santa Maria colour, emerald cut, 6 ct 585 yellow gold and aquamarine. Lady's ring, the shank hallmarked “585” and engraved “6 ct” inside; ring head with a natural aquamarine in Santa Maria colour of 6 ct in emerald cut, in a claw setting with ten claws, two on each of the short sides and three on each of the long sides, the setting open at the sides and back; flat shoulders tapering towards the shank with a stepped transition. With accompanying certificate from Juwelier Thomas Kortum, Leipzig, dated 29 December 2025, which dates the ring to the 1960s/1970s. Very good condition. Inner diameter 17.2 mm. 360-degree photo available on our website. The name aquamarine derives from the Latin aqua marina, sea water; sailors of antiquity believed the stone could calm the waves and protect them at sea, and beryl, the family to which aquamarine belongs like emerald, was said to make its wearer invincible and amiable and to sharpen the mind. To this day aquamarine is regarded as the birthstone for March, as a gift for the 19th wedding anniversary and as a stone said to bring happiness in marriage. The name Santa Maria goes back to the Santa Maria de Itabira mine in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and today stands for the colour quality of aquamarine regarded as the finest, a pure blue without yellow or brown tones. The emerald cut, called Smaragdschliff or Achteckschliff in German, is an octagonal step cut used above all for coloured gemstones. The solitaire ring form, in which a single stone without accompanying stones forms the ring head, places the colour of the aquamarine entirely at the centre.
