Chakram, Indian Throwing Ring of Metal with Encircling Flowering Scroll, After a Historical Model Metal. Flat, closed ring of even width, the surface between two plain, slightly raised marginal bars engraved all round with densely set flowers and pinnate leaves. Made after a historical model. Good condition commensurate with age, traces of corrosion. D. 25.5 cm The chakram is the throwing weapon of the Sikh warriors of the Punjab: the steel ring, sharpened on the outside, was spun on the index finger and hurled; it was carried above the turban or on the arm. Collectors' pieces of the 18th and 19th c. are mostly damascened in gold or silver and achieve correspondingly high prices. The present piece is engraved work after an old model.
