Chinese Soapstone Brush Washer with Dragon and Clouds, Two Containers Soapstone, carved from a single block. Brush washer with two oval containers side by side. The stone in a strong red-brown with dark brown to black zones used for rock and cloud bands. Above the containers a dragon winds its way through piled-up clouds. The reverse is worked as a porous rock face with several openings. Condition commensurate with age, chipping, losses to the head, the vessel and the left side. 14 x 24 x 5 cm (HxWxD) Brush washers and brush rests belong to the four treasures of the Chinese scholar's studio, in which brush, ink, inkstone and paper came together as the writing equipment of the educated man. Soapstone, a soft talc rock, could be carved with simple tools down to the finest openwork and was therefore preferred for such desk implements; the natural colour layering of the stone was deliberately worked into the composition, dark inclusions becoming rock and bark, light passages becoming blossoms and fruit. In China the dragon is not a creature of terror but the symbol of imperial power and of life-giving rain; shown among clouds it refers to the turning of the seasons and to good fortune.
