Baluster vase with mountain and river landscape, famille rose, China, 20th century Porcelain, white, glazed, polychrome overglaze painting in the famille rose palette. Baluster form with tall trumpet neck and flared mouth. On the body a mountain and river landscape with high rocky peaks, a pine above rugged rocks, a pavilion on the shore and wide expanses of water; to the side an eight-line Chinese inscription in vertical columns, with three red seals. The neck in enamel colours, on a pink ground light scrollwork, green leafy tendrils and blossoms in white, red and blue, the mouth with a yellow band, below the neck a turquoise border with flowering tendril and a yellow band with pink lappets, the foot with an ornamental border in pink, yellow and light blue. On the base an iron-red rectangular seal mark. Good age-appropriate condition. H. 30.5 cm. Famille rose is the term established in the European trade for overglaze decoration in opaque pink and carmine tones, used in China since the early 18th century; in Chinese the group is known as fencai. The combination of landscape painting, poem inscription and red seal follows the pictorial tradition of Chinese ink painting, which was transferred to porcelain in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
