Indian Khanjar Dagger with Lion Head Jade Hilt and Damascus Blade, 20th C. Steel, jade. Khanjar with a strongly curved, double-edged Damascus blade with a flowing linear pattern. The hilt of green jade worked fully in the round as a lion's head: the mane in sweeping, deeply worked strands, the muzzle compact, the eyes set with large red stones. At the neck of the hilt with engraved scrollwork and a band of red and green stone settings. Condition commensurate with age. Blade length 27.5 cm, overall length 40 cm In Indian courtly art the lion stands for strength and royal dignity and is encountered equally on thrones, gates and weapons. On jade dagger hilts the stone is worked into the animal head from a single piece; this is lengthy grinding work, since jade is not cut but removed with abrasive. Such hilts were frequently mounted on blades that already existed, which is why hilt and blade are not necessarily of the same age.
