Stanwell advertising figure, boy with pipe at cigar boxes, resin painted, circa 1970/90 Resin, painted. Advertising figure of the firm Stanwell, Denmark, in the style of historical tobacco advertising. Standing boy with dark skin and short curly hair in rust-red jacket, orange waistcoat with neckerchief and orange and dark brown striped trousers, barefoot with crossed legs, a pipe in the right hand, leaning with his left side against a stack of cigar boxes. On the lower box the lettering "STANWELL", above it in an oval cartouche the company emblem with horse-drawn carriage, further prints on the boxes. Round base with relief tiled floor and dark moulded edge, felt pads underneath. Good condition commensurate with age, pipe stem glued. H. 37 cm, base D. 11 cm. 360-degree photo available on our website. Stanwell goes back to Poul Nielsen, who founded a woodworking business in Denmark in 1942 and made briar pipes from 1948. To hold his own against British competition, Nielsen deliberately chose an English-sounding name and as company emblem a hackney carriage with coachman, which also appears on this figure. The pipe maker Sixten Ivarsson shaped the brand's Danish pipe design with around 40 models, and in 1969 production moved to Borup. In Germany the pipe brand became known in the 1970s through commercials by Loriot with the slogan "Drei Dinge braucht der Mann: Feuer, Pfeife, Stanwell". The advertising figure takes up the type of tobacco advertising figure that stood as a shop figure in colonial goods stores in the 18th and 19th centuries.
