Brass Bell with Handwritten Inscription Daddeldu, Maritime Closing-Time Bell Bell of brass with a straight, pierced suspension lug and a stepped sound bow. On the side the inscription Daddeldu! painted in black in script, beneath it a black underline. Inside the clapper on a mount. Condition commensurate with age, scratches, clapper and mount corroded. H. 15.5 cm, diam. 15 cm. Daddeldu is a sailors' word borrowed from the English that'll do and stands for the end of the working day and for night's rest in the sense of that's it for now. The expression became known through Joachim Ringelnatz, who in 1920 created the fictional character of the hard-drinking sailor with his poem Vom Seemann Kuttel Daddeldu and performed with it in cabaret in the 1920s and 1930s; in the Low German-speaking area the word is still current today. Brass bells of this size served on board as a signal bell and were used in inns as a closing-time or regulars' table bell.
