In the 19th century the Hanseatic city of Bremen was one of the most important German seaports and the seat of large shipping companies such as Norddeutscher Lloyd. Windjammers, mostly three-masted sailing ships with steel hulls, served trade on overseas routes and represent the peak of large-scale sailing navigation circa 1900. By Bismarck's decision of December 1866 the colours black-white-red became the merchant flag of the North German Confederation and after 1871 remained the flag of the Reich until the end of the First World War. Dioramas with nautical motifs were made from this time on by sailors and model builders, as souvenirs of long voyages and as display objects.
