There the house provided guests with the pipe, only the tobacco was charged, and the horn mouthpiece was cleaned after use. Such pipes were made in workshops of the Westerwald, which supplied the Austro-Hungarian market well into the 20th century. Delicate scrolls, flowers and vases were popular decorations of these smoking pipes. Condensate and saliva collect in the reservoir (Abguss, also called Saftsack).
