Lot of ten wooden textile printing blocks, printing blocks with ornamental patterns and borders Wood, lot of ten wooden printing blocks, also wooden stamps or textile stamps, for textile printing, with relief-carved ornamental patterns and borders: 1) border block with volutes between dashed strips, 2) border block with S-scrolls, 3) block with twigs and groups of dots, 4) block with arched scales, 5) block with serpentine granulated band, 6) block with angled rows of leaves and drop shapes, 7) block with serrated scattered forms, 8) curved block with scattered pattern, 9) narrow block with ribbed waves, 10) border block with lattice band between star flowers. Good condition commensurate with age, edges chipped in places. Max. 14x14 cm (LxW). Wooden blocks are the tool of hand printing, which includes blueprint (Blaudruck). There the blueprinter uses the block to print a resist paste, the Papp, onto linen or cotton; in the subsequent dyeing with indigo the printed areas remain light, producing a white pattern on a blue ground. In Germany the first blueprint is documented in Augsburg in 1689/1690. Since 28 November 2018 blueprint has been part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage as the shared cultural heritage of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary. The blocks were cut by the block cutter; in Central Europe only one trained block cutter is still working today.
