Small brass beam balance, precision scale with beam, two hanging pans and pointer Brass, small beam balance, precision scale consisting of a beam, two hanging pans and a pointer for determining equilibrium, suspension with ring and S-shaped hook, the round pans on dark cords. Good condition commensurate with age. Pans D. 5 cm. The equal-arm beam balance is regarded as the oldest form of scale: the goods to be weighed are placed in one pan and weights in the other until the beam is in equilibrium. Small precision scales of this type were used by apothecaries as well as jewellers for the accurate weighing of small quantities, in the pharmacy as the apothecary's balance. The coin scale with beam and two brass pans, also called gold scale, served to weigh gold coins individually in payment transactions.
