Historical brass measuring tool, two brass spools with hooks, case with gold-coloured tooling Brass and leather, historical measuring tool in its original hinged case covered with tooled leather, one outer side with gold-coloured tooling of scattered flowers, floral tendrils and a surrounding border, the opposite side in red leather with blind-tooled lozenge pattern, the interior lined with pink fabric and with fitted recesses, containing two round, flat brass spools with hooks and thread, each spool with a lateral tab and a central square opening, the hooks as flat brass loops bent back at the end, case with press-stud clasp. Good condition commensurate with age, case rubbed. Case 2x9.5x7.5 cm (HxWxD). Leather-covered cases with gold tooling served to hold measuring instruments and sets of instruments; one example is the leather case of an artillery instrument set in the Kunstkammer of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. The making of such cases and caskets was the work of the case makers, a craft in its own right.
