Lot of mounts, brass/bronze and iron, mascarons, scroll forms, door knockers, 11 pieces Brass/bronze and iron, lot of mounts, 11 pieces, dark patina: 1) two large mascarons, grotesque bearded head with open mouth and rectangular opening, hollow cast, iron spike on the back, 14.5x12 cm (HxW). 2) two scroll forms, square leaf rosettes with central button, iron spike on the back. 3) four small mascarons, bearded head with pierced mouth, four fixing holes each, greenish to brown patina, 7x6 cm (HxW). 4) two figural door knockers, ring formed of two animal bodies, with iron split pin. 5) one iron appliqué, pierced lozenge shape with lily-shaped points, with traces of corrosion. Good condition commensurate with age, dark patina partly rubbed, iron fixings on the back corroded and partly bent. The mascaron is a sculptural ornamental motif in the form of an exaggerated or frightening face modelled on mythical creatures or deities; distorted features, open mouth and puffed-out cheeks are typical of it. Known since antiquity as a caricaturing mask, the motif found a famous expression in the Renaissance in Federico Zuccari's garden portal in the form of a mascaron and was revived in the 19th century as prefabricated facade decoration for urban residential buildings. As a half relief, the mascaron adorns buildings inside and out, as well as smaller objects such as furniture and vessels.
