Four Historicism chairs, oak, Viennese cane, crest with blank shield and vine leaves, circa 1900 Oak and cane, four chairs in Renaissance Revival style, Historicism, circa 1900. Backrest with rectangular frame and panel of Viennese cane, back frame with carved leaf frieze, above a pierced carved crest with a blank coat of arms shield in a cartouche between C-scrolls with vine leaves and grapes, turned back supports, seat of Viennese cane in a moulded seat frame with carved leaf frieze, turned front legs and spiral-turned back legs with square blocks, H-shaped stretcher with turned and spiral-turned rails. Good used condition commensurate with age, caning intact. 96x46x46 cm (HxWxD), seat height 46 cm. The cane of the seats and backrests is obtained from the rattan palm of Southeast Asia; the octagonal weave of diagonally crossing strands is also known as Viennese cane. Caning reached Europe in the late 16th or early 17th century, the first furniture with caning appeared in Germany around 1700, and Michael Thonet used it for his chairs from the 1830s. The Renaissance Revival of Historicism took up the forms of the 16th-century Renaissance once again. One example of this style is an oak chair by the furniture factory Ed. Wellhausen, which supplied seating with legs in the form of multi-sectioned columns for the Old Town Hall in Hanover between 1880 and 1891.
