Meissen cup with saucer, porcelain and Böttger stoneware, acanthus and grape relief, 1988 Porcelain and Böttger stoneware, cup (Koppchen) with saucer, Meissen, first quality. Cup in white porcelain, glazed, the wall with a continuous relief of acanthus leaves and grapes, underside with the blue crossed swords mark with star and the year "1988". Saucer in unglazed red-brown Böttger stoneware with acanthus leaf and grape relief around the plain well, underside with impressed crossed swords mark with star between the years "1774" and "1988". Good condition. Cup H. 4.5 cm. Böttger stoneware goes back to Johann Friedrich Böttger (1682 to 1719), whose brown fine stoneware at Meissen was the decisive step towards the invention of white porcelain. After Böttger's death the material was soon forgotten and was only redeveloped at the manufactory in the first quarter of the 20th century; it was registered as a trademark in April 1919. The crossed swords mark with star dates back to the time of the manufactory director Count Camillo Marcolini, under whom it was used from 1774 to 1814. Anniversary cups of this kind in porcelain and Böttger stoneware bear the year of their issue in the mark.
