Meissen Vase, Chamberstick and Lidded Box with Red Rose, First Choice, Crossed Swords Mark Porcelain, polychrome painted, gilt, glazed. Three pieces by the Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory in the Red Rose pattern. 1) Bulbous vase with a drawn-in neck and slightly flaring mouth, to the front a large pink rose with a bud and green leaves, to the reverse two rosebuds, the rim and foot ring gilt. H. 12 cm. 2) Low chamberstick / candle holder, with a rounded foot, bell-shaped stem and wide drip pan, on the stem and pan roses and buds, the rims with gold lines. H. 6.5 cm. 3) Round lidded box, the slightly domed cover with a large rose, the wall with a bud, the cover and foot rim with a gold line. 5x9.5 cm (HxD). The undersides with the underglaze blue crossed swords mark without pommel, together with the impressed model number and the red painter's number. Good condition. Vase, candlestick and lidded box together form a dressing table set of the kind found on the vanity in the 19th and early 20th centuries: the box held powder or hairpins, the candlestick provided light at the mirror, the vase held a single blossom. Meissen offered such sets in all the current flower patterns, so that they could be assembled to taste and added to later. In most cases only individual pieces survive, because the boxes, being objects of daily use, were the most likely to come to harm.
