Meissen Pair of Trumpet Vases with Coloured Flowers and Gold Rim, First Choice, Crossed Swords Mark Porcelain, polychrome painted, gilt, glazed. Two trumpet vases by the Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory, the body rising from a rounded foot into a flaring trumpet mouth, the rim and foot ring with gold lines. The larger vase to the front with a floral bouquet of violet and orange blossoms with large green leaves, to the reverse two scattered flowers; the smaller vase to the front with a purple peony and blue and yellow blossoms, to the reverse a single scattered flower. The undersides with the underglaze blue crossed swords mark without pommel, together with the impressed model number and the red painter's number. Good condition. H. 14 cm and H. 9 cm The trumpet vase is one of the oldest vessel forms made at Meissen and goes back to East Asian models, which Augustus the Strong had collected in great numbers. The applied flower painting developed at Meissen from about 1740 out of the Deutsche Blume, which translated botanical pattern books into a painterly motif scattered loosely across the wall. Every piece is still painted by hand today; the number following the pattern name states how many groups of flowers are placed on the piece.
