Three Meissen Reticulated Plates, Rich Dragon Red and Indian Painting, Gilt Decoration Porcelain, polychrome painted and gilt, glazed. Three plates by the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen with pierced rims in basketwork form: 1) Rich Dragon in red, pattern number 320510, in the well a pair of phoenixes with a dragon above and below and band ornaments between, the rim with three moulded rocaille cartouches and rich gilding. 2) Indian painting in purple with peonies and leafy scrolls in the well and three cartouches on the rim, the basketwork with gold lines and gold scrolls. 3) Indian painting 2 in green on a rim with three relief rocailles and basketwork relief, gold edge. On the bases the underglaze blue crossed swords and the impressed number 54800. Good condition, the plate with green painting with minimal underglaze flaws. D. 15.5 cm each. Indian painting is the historical technical term for stylised East Asian flower patterns; in the 18th c. they were called Indian flowers, in distinction from the German flowers, and were current at Meissen from 1720 in the early Hoeroldt period. The dragon pattern follows Japanese models in the Kakiemon style and was made exclusively for the Saxon court until 1918, which is why it is also known in the trade as the Court Dragon. The impressed number denotes the form: 54800 stands for the reticulated plate of about 15 cm diameter in the Neuer Ausschnitt form; the manufactory has issued five-figure form numbers since 1973. Three colourways side by side give a cross-section through the East Asian inspired Meissen patterns.
