Meissen coffee service with red Ming dragon for eight, court decor Porcelain, 'Red Dragon' (Ming dragon) decor in iron red and gold, glazed, partly with two grinding marks. Extensive coffee service for eight by the Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory, consisting of a coffee pot, a milk jug, a sugar bowl, eight three-piece place settings (cup, saucer, cake plate) and further cake plates. Each piece is painted with the iron-red, four-clawed Ming dragon and the 'flaming pearl', the rims gilt. On the undersides the underglaze-blue crossed-swords mark, partly with two grinding marks; the pieces of differing periods of manufacture. Good condition, one cup with a restored handle. Cup h. 6.5 cm. The 'Red Dragon' first appeared in 1731 in the records of the Meissen manufactory; echoing the imperial symbolism of the dragon, Elector Augustus the Strong claimed the motif for himself, so that it was made exclusively for the Dresden court until 1918. From 1858 the pattern was also produced in further colours. The four-clawed dragon with the 'flaming pearl' is among the best-known and most sought-after decors of Meissen. An extensive service for collectors and lovers of Meissen porcelain.
