Meissen Prunkteller with fruit painting and gilt acanthus relief, wall plate, 1st choice Porcelain, polychrome painted, gilt, glazed, 1st choice, decorative or wall plate by the Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen, the well with hand-painted fruit painting with two fruits, berries and small blue flowers, the wide, shaped rim with acanthus leaf relief moulded in the round, richly gilt, on the reverse the underglaze blue crossed swords mark and a wall hanger, good condition commensurate with age, gilding partially rubbed, D. 25 cm, H. 4 cm Prunkteller is the term for Meissen display plates with moulded, partly gilt leaf relief on the rim and a painted centre, as the manufactory already produced them in the late 19th century. The manufactory in Meissen had been founded by Augustus the Strong in 1710 as the first porcelain manufactory in Europe. Its mark, the crossed swords from the Electoral Saxon coat of arms, has been applied under the glaze since 1720; pieces of lower sorting received grinding cuts (Schleifstriche) through the mark, while the 1st choice remained without such cuts.
