Meissen Three Dishes with Red Rose, Shaped and Scalloped, First Choice, Crossed Swords Mark Porcelain, polychrome painted, gilt, glazed. Three oval dishes by the Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory in graduated sizes, the rims shaped, scalloped and set off with a gold line. In the well of each dish a large pink rose in full bloom with buds and green leaves, on the border single rosebuds. The undersides with the underglaze blue crossed swords mark without pommel, together with the impressed model number and the red painter's number; the smallest dish with four felt glides underneath. Good condition. Largest dish 3.5x18x14 cm (HxWxD) The Red Rose is one of the best known Meissen patterns of the 19th and 20th centuries. It shows a single fully opened centifolia rose whose petals are lightened from the inside outwards, so that the blossom stands out from the surface. The pattern demands a sure hand from the painter: the rose is laid in without preliminary drawing and in a single sequence, and corrections are impossible on the glazed body. Graduated sets of dishes were a favourite wedding present.
