Meissen Plate Naturalistic Flower Polychrome with Butterfly, First Quality, 2nd Half 20th c. Porcelain, polychrome painted and gilt, glazed. Plate by the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen with a shaped and scalloped edge, the rim in basketweave relief, the edge with a gold line. In the well a bunch of blue flax flowers and pink heather with narrow green leaves; on the rim a yellow butterfly, a spray of violets and a red flowering spray. On the base the underglaze blue crossed swords without cancellation strokes and in gold the pattern number 250210. A hanger is glued to the reverse. First quality. Good condition. D. 25.5 cm. Naturalistic flower painting replaced the stylised East Asian patterns at Meissen around 1740 and was at first executed from engravings; butterflies and insects were added as motifs in their own right. The manufactory lists the pattern under the name Flower, naturalistic polychrome with butterfly and gold rim. It has issued six-figure pattern numbers since the 1970s; they appear in gold or purple beside the crossed swords.
