Fürstenberg chocolate pot with wooden handle and garland frieze, gilt, 2nd half of the 20th century Porcelain, polychrome painted, gilt-decorated, glazed. Chocolate pot by the Fürstenberg porcelain manufactory. Cylindrical body, spout attached at the front with a heart-shaped pierced strainer field above a relief-moulded cartouche with gilt painting, conical handle socket at the side with a turned, dark-grained wooden handle with metal pin, domed lid with a modelled pink flower bud as finial and a painted green leafy sprig added. Around the shoulder a garland frieze of curved gilt leafy sprigs and tendrils of purple-red and green leaves with groups of blue dots, gilt rims at the foot and lid, gilt lines on the handle socket. In the base the underglaze blue mark "F" with crown and underlined year numeral "1", stamped "FÜRSTENBERG", "SEIT 1747", "WEST-GERMANY", in red "3 490" and "4". Condition commensurate with age, porcelain handle stem cracked. H. 15 cm The Fürstenberg porcelain manufactory was founded in 1747 by Duke Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel at Fürstenberg Castle on the Weser; the arcanist Johann Kilian Benckgraff, lured away from Höchst, brought the knowledge of porcelain making to the Weser in 1753, and in the same year the Duke decreed the blue "F" as the mark. The chocolate pot is a vessel form of the 18th century: cocoa was not yet defatted at that time and had to be constantly whisked and heated, and the wooden handle attached at the side is the characteristic feature of these pots.
