Five Meissen Plates Indian Painting Purple with Border, Gold Rim, 20th c. Porcelain, two cancellation strokes, painted in purple and gilt, glazed. Five plates by the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen with a plain, shallowly rising rim. In each well the Indian painting in purple with a peony and a chrysanthemum, leafy scrolls and one large serrated leaf, the flower centres heightened in gold; on the rim an encircling border of purple spiral scrolls with small blossoms, the edge with a gold line. On the bases the underglaze blue crossed swords and a pattern number in purple. Hangers are glued to the reverses. Good condition. D. 17.5 cm each. The manufactory lists this pattern as Indian painting 2, with border, purple, gold dots and gold rim under the number 340410; the green counterpart bears 340310, the more richly painted version 343410. The term Indian painting is the historical technical name for stylised East Asian flower patterns, which in the 18th c. were called Indian flowers and were distinguished from the German flowers; from 1720 they were current at Meissen in the early Hoeroldt period. Five matching plates make an immediately usable set for collectors of this pattern.
