KPM Berlin Tea Service Ceres for Six, Design Schmuz-Baudiss, 21 Pieces Porcelain, polychrome painted and gilt, glazed. Tea service for six by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin in the Ceres pattern, comprising a teapot with cover, a sugar box with cover, a milk jug and six three-piece place settings of cup, saucer and cake plate, 21 pieces in all. The teapot of compressed globular form with a tubular spout and a raised strap handle, the cover with a modelled fruit and flower knop; the sugar box on a foot with two handles, the milk jug of pear form. The edges of the plates and cups with a border of golden-yellow sheaves of corn between green bands, together with cornucopias bearing fruit and flowers in red, yellow, blue and violet over green foliage; handles, spout and knops with green leaf and fruit decoration. On the bases the underglaze blue sceptre mark and the red orb above KPM. Good condition, the pot with a small flaw in the decoration. Cup h. 5 cm, pot h. 15 cm. The design was created in 1912 for the 150th anniversary of the manufactory, celebrated in 1913; Theodor Hermann Schmuz-Baudiss (1859 to 1942) was then artistic director of the KPM. It is named after Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture. The ornament was executed differently according to the pattern number, from a plain gold rim through full matt gilding to the coloured version. The design combines the late Jugendstil with classicist ornamental forms.
