Aelteste Volkstedt Porcelain Figure Gardener with Spade and Blossom, White Porcelain, Thuringia White porcelain, glazed. Standing figure of a young man with a broad-brimmed hat, long coat over a closed waistcoat, neckerchief, breeches and shoes with bows, leaning against a tree stump. In one hand a single blossom, at the foot of the stump a spade is stuck in the ground, a watering can standing on the stump. On an oval base with moulded rocaille relief of C-scrolls and latticework, a rose applied to the standing surface. In the base the blue mark with a crown above an interlaced monogram and the year 1762, impressed in the base V20732. Good condition commensurate with age, the blossom in the hand chipped. H. 27 cm. 360-degree photo on our website. The manufactory at Volkstedt goes back to a privilege granted to Georg Heinrich Macheleid by the Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt on 8 September 1760; in 1762 the works were moved to Volkstedt, to which the year in the mark refers. In 1899 the Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanfabrik emerged from it, in 1913 followed the association with the Schwarzburger Werkstätten in Unterweißbach, where in the 1920s Bauhaus designs by Theodor Bogler and Otto Lindig were modelled. After its period as a state-owned enterprise the house was taken over in 1990 by the Porzellanfabrik Tettau; it is run today as an open manufactory and is regarded as the oldest porcelain manufactory still working in Thuringia.
