Porcelain figure of a recumbent dog with collar, painted in colours and glazed, animal sculpture Porcelain, painted in colours, glazed, figure of a recumbent dog, also dog figurine, the head raised and turned to the left, the forelegs stretched out, the hind legs tucked in, white body, dappled light grey on the back and head, a narrow dark collar around the neck, unmarked, numbered on the base "6240", the standing surface unglazed, good condition commensurate with age, 4.5x8.5x3 cm (HxWxD) Small porcelain animal figures, also called animal sculptures, are a fixed part of the repertoire of the European porcelain manufactories. The restrained painting in white and muted grey tones probably follows the underglaze painting that Arnold Krog developed from 1885 as artistic director of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Copenhagen by combining Japanese imagery with European naturalism; the Copenhagen porcelains received the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition of 1889. Dog figures in this manner show the animal in a calm pose, the markings of the coat only suggested and the form unified by the glossy glaze. The impressed number on the underside is the model number of the mould from which such dog figures were produced in series.
