Meissen large oval platter, Neuosier shape, Blume 2 decor, crossed swords mark with dot, circa 1930 Porcelain, one cancellation cut, polychrome painted, gilt line, glazed. Large oval platter by the Meissen manufactory, Neuosier shape with basketweave relief in panels on the shaped rim. In the well Blume 2 decoration, a large blue and yellow striped tulip with leaves, accompanied by forget-me-nots, a fine gilt line at the transition to the border. On the underside the underglaze blue crossed swords mark with dot, circa 1930. Good condition commensurate with age, minor glaze flaws. 40x30x5 cm (LxWxH) The osier relief imitates basketwork of willow rods; the name derives from the French word osier for basket willow. In Meissen, Johann Friedrich Eberlein created the first of these basketweave reliefs in 1733, known today as Altozier. Circa 1745 the Neuozier followed, also spelled Neuosier, whose weave is divided into panels by curved ribs. The manufactory used the crossed swords mark with a dot between the blade tips from 1924 to 1934, the so-called Pfeiffer period; a line subsequently cut into the mark identifies a piece of 2nd choice.
