The Porzellanfabrik Schönwald in Upper Franconia goes back to Johann Nicol Müller, who converted his sawmill into a porcelain factory in 1879. After his death in 1896 his sons Friedrich and Michael Müller continued the business, which became the Aktiengesellschaft Porzellanfabrik Schönwald in 1898. As early as the end of the 19th century the works specialised in hotel porcelain for the catering and hotel trade, whereas the covered vase with hand-painted bird medallions belongs to the decorative porcelain of the factory. In 1927 the Thuringian Porzellanfabrik Kahla took over the company, in 1972 the merger with Hutschenreuther AG followed, which was renamed BHS tabletop AG in 1998.
